Places to visit in Ossiachersee Area.
#1
Places to visit on and around the Ossiachersee, Karnten (Carinthia) Austria.

Ossiachersee   This See is situated in the South Western corner of Austria.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Ossiach

Landskron  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landskron_...Carinthia) This castle stands on the steep hill more or less behind Camping Berghof.     Good views from up there over the See and Villach there is a Zoo and an Eagle Show.  Nice restaurant too.

Gerlitzen http://www.gerlitzen.com/en/prices/price-list.html    This is the mountain on the North side of the Ossiachersee and can reach the top by Cable Car and Chairlift.  Again wonderful views over the whole area and worth a visit on a nice clear day.  Opening times are governed by the weather, that is Snow.

Boat Trips. http://www.ossiachersee-schifffahrt.at/en/  This is a must I think to take a round trip of the See by Boat it is like a water taxi you can get on and off at all the stops around the See.  Refreshments are served on board.  Dogs and Bicycles can be taken with you too.

Villach Situated at the South Western corner of the See.   This is a lovely City with an Old Town Centre to explore plus a huge indoor Shopping Centre names Atrio  http://www.atrio.at/en/  at the other end of the city. This is what we call a wet day place to visit.  But as it is not usually wet when we are there we do go when it is dry.  Some lovely shops and my favourites are C&A and next door Adler clothing and Depot home deco and of course Tschibo's Coffee and good items of all sorts to buy, stock changing every week..  There is the biggest Superspar in the area and excellent variety of Food and Produce.
The Carpark underneath is the best bet with 2,000 Free Parking spaces which are extra wide at 2.70 metres. Afraid this is one of the very few places Dogs are not allowed.
You can visit a Caravan/Motor Home/Accessories Centre here http://www.falle.at/  Most of Staff speak English
directions to get there on their website.

Feldkirchen  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feldkirche...C3%A4rnten  Situated at the Eastern end of the See this is a super little friendly town wth a lovely market place and old town.   Good selection of shops.  For food Eurospar is our favourite but there is an Hofer (Aldi) in other countries and a Lidl.  The other similar to Waitrose is Mercure.  My favourite store is Nemo's for good clothing and Craft Shop.

Ossiach Very small Town with a few shops and lots of nice Restaurants.  Places to visit are the the Stift (Abbey) and the Church is beautiful inside.

Shopping.  Food shopping on the lake can be done at Hofer, Lidls at Western end Billa and Spa on the Northern side and Spa at Berghof Camping.  They are all open on Sundays except, I think with a change of rules now not Hofer and Lidl's, not sure whether the ban came into force.

Mountain Passes  All three of these are worth a visit as below.  Leaflets on all three should be in Campsites Receptions.  To drive to the Maltatal it is worth going via the Millstattersee rather than the A10.

Nockalmstrasse   https://www.nockalmstrasse.at/na/en/nock...oadhttp://

                        http://www.biosphaerenparknockberge.at/e...-road.html

Villacherstrasse   https://www.villacher-alpenstrasse.at/va/de/index

Porche Museum http://www.auto-museum.at and the Maltatal,  you have to drive through part of Gmund to get along the valley to the Maltatal.  http://www.kaerntencard.at/en/ausflugszi...road-95://

Worthersee  This is the largest See in the Area and a visit not to be missed.  Dip your hands in the See and it is warm fed by hot springs.
You can drive all around the See taking in the towns of Portschach  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%B6rts...B6rthersee  where we always park the car in the Station Carpark walk across the road for a Cafe and Kuchen at Bakerei Weineroither, Then walk down to the See past the Parkhotel along the prom past the bandstand down to the spit and catch a Boat for a Rundfahrt (Circle around the See)  Stopping off at Velden at the Western end for a walk around Designer Shops and Casino in much evidence here and then to Maria Werth part way up the South Side.  Very picturesque Church and Chapel well worth walking up to for the ornate decoration inside.  Plenty of nice Cafe's and Restaurant's here  for Lunch.

Back on board and up to Klagenfurt the main town of Karnten (Carinthia)  When the boat docks you can catch a bus into the City Centre or walk to the Canal  (in Season) and catch the barge into the City.  A very old City in the Centre and well worth a visit.  Outside the City is a modern indoor shopping centre.

If arriving by car you can leave your car and  P+R to the Centre on the Minimundus Carpark it use to be FOC but do not know a days. Minimundus is a Miniature Buildings Park and very interesting. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimundus

If driving around the See be sure to visit the Pyramidenkogel http://www.pyramidenkogel.info/ the wooden structure on top of the mountain on the Southern side of the See.  Wonderful views from the top which can be reached by Lift or Stairs.  If you are brave descend by the Shute. Undecided   Well worth taking photo's from every stage over the See or to the South the Karawanken Alps over which lies Slovenia.
