Well after looking through diary it looks like our first trip away won’t be until early February and we are fancying the Peak District and may go to Castleton CMC site for a Sunday to Thursday break, does anyone have any CL recommendations nearby, due to time of year hard standing will be best and we are looking for walking from site locations so we don’t have to move the MH.

Castleton Club Site isn't that good for dogs Hugh in truth, one of reasons we no longer use it. Tiny, even for a Chihuahua, dog walk on site, and you are straight onto a busy road outside site, pavements with stone walls. Makes early morning and late night walkies a problem. If Bella can plait her legs a bit, you can get into a field walk about quarter of a mile from site, but it's on lead only, and likely to be very muddy. Longer walks from site are good of course, up Cavedale under Peveril Castle, or the Mam Tor, Lose Hill, back down into Hope circular walk. Pubs are great as well, can highly recommend The George, The Castle and we had part of our honeymoon at the Nags Head Inn! Great little shops, the caverns, the visitor centre etc..... The area is rammed with tourists at the weekend, it's a procession up the Mam Tor walk, but a lot quieter in week. And sheep, thousands of sheep everywhere, so dog walks are on lead affairs. Superb area, very interesting, but as I say, the Castleton site just needs a better dog walk to make it better for dog owners. I will take a look online at some of the options nearby, as we are likely to have passed them if we haven't stayed.
Well, just had a look. Not much open all year. Reviews for Castleton Site mention pathetic on lead only dog walk, but if it's just for a few nights, then it might be ok for a late night last wee! Such a shame after the refurbishment that they haven't considered doing more, as it is a fantastic location. Nellie might know of an option.....

Thank you TDA, you’ve confirmed what we were thinking and what our searches had shown. We would be going Sunday to Thursday so missing the busy weekend days. The dog walk scenario is a bit like our position at home where we have to travel along main road initially so we would cope and Bella doesn’t ‘go’ as soon as we get out. The pluses are outweighing the minuses at the mo even taking into account Sheffield’s roads!!!!!!

Can confirm the paltry dog walk at Castleton site, one of the worst we have been on. The area is brilliant and the pubs very dog welcoming (one pub even puts ice cubes in the dog water for your dog) plus good for eating, easy walk into town plus lots of good walks around. Haven't any knowledge of CL's sorry.

Hugh, there are few CLs down that way and the one near the village is no dogs. We're on Priestfield Grange Farm CL at Old Brampton, near Chesterfield at the moment. We've used this site for many years and would recommend it. There is an adverse review on the web site but it paints a false picture IMO. The pitches are all hard, large enough for your M/H and there are plenty of walks directly from then site. The farm's fields extend all the way down to a series of 3 Reservoirs, Linacre Lakes, which have a track all the way round. There are other footpaths & B/Ws and quiet lanes from the site and one can make up plenty of decent walks. There is a pub 10 mins up the road that do food.

Another suggestion is Splash Farm near Matlock.....but tda is the expert on that one.

I think you would be ok for a few days then Hugh. I had a look at one of our OS maps, and there is a footpath not far from site, closer to Castleton, it is a flat walk through fields towards Hope, you can't miss it as there is a dirty great big cement works facing you!
The site itself is nice, we used to go at Christmas for a couple of nights or so with friends, and Castleton itself has tons to see and do, with good pubs and eateries. If you decide to do a cavern, Speedwell is the one to do, it's an underground boat ride, and unless is has changed, the boats are pushed along by someone walking along the ceiling of the tunnel, laying flat on the boat! Doubt Bella could go down though. She might be able to go into some of the others such as Peak Cavern, which lies in a cleft under the castle, very interesting, a former rope works is in the entrance. If you do venture out in the MH, Hathersage is very nice, some good outdoor gear shops and pubs. The Pack Horse Inn is our favourite there. Out the other way, up Winnats Pass, (well worth a drive up, but check width of gates at the top!) The Chestnut Centre is an Otter Sanctuary, and I think it had Red Squirrels as well last time we visited. Loads to do and see.
Think our first trip out might be in next couple of weeks. Not far, we have unfinished business going back to Alkborough, the CL we had to cancel when Rob was taken ill before Christmas.

Would Buxton be any good, Hugh? Our first ever stay in our first ever new caravan was at Lime Tree Park at Buxton, with a hard-standing pitch, and a nice walk from the site, and down into Buxton. We've been back with friends, since, but not in the last few years. Plenty of dog-friendly pubs in Buxton too, which helps to make a holiday. We also liked Rivendale near Ashbourne, which has a good dog-walking area directly from the site, and a 'pub' on site, but is a bit further out of Ashbourne. You're right on the Tissington Trail, too, and not far from Dovedale - both lovely walks. Both are open in February.
We stayed near Castleton two or three years ago - but in a cottage, with our sons, as a Christmas present. Lovely!
