Public Order! Ok

There is one side effect of the Covid Pandemic that is causing me growing unease. My every instinct as a long term career cop Is an instinct that there is an insidious growth in violent knife crime, robbery and general disregard of the law.
Our Police numbers have been decimated in the past 20 years, training has been neglected and discipline eroded. On top of that the Police have been handed new responsibilities in respect of Covid enforcement. They can’t do everything. My sense is that the criminal has spotted the open goal and is increasingly taking advantage. The law abiding citizen may well become a target soon.

Living in a small rural village in england’s most sparsely populated county, I can’t claim to have first hand experience of the activities you describe TF - neighbourhood watch excitement round these parts tends to go into overdrive if a garden shed is broken into!

However, like everyone else I do watch TV. I occasionally enjoy the police programmes on during the daytime eg the interceptors etc - and the thing that strikes me is the lack of respect for officers and the preparedness of people to argue, answer back and assault officers.

That’s very true Bugs, sadly much of this upsurge in violent crime is due to an insidious growth in drug use fuelled by the “County Lines” phenomenon. It is one of the major threats to rural as well as urban crime.

But on the brighter side of society, Covid has also brought out the best in our society with many people going the extra mile to help their neighbours!

I must say that at times I'm appalled at the attitude of the police. The way to gain respect is to show respect, something that isn't very forthcoming from todays police force. I've had first hand experience of this attitude, after sliding down the M1 in an overturned motorhome. I told the officer with "attitude" that he would be better employed in South Africa, before his buddy dragged him away. That's not the only incidence I've witnessed. I'll say no more.

Sadly AD, I am forced to agree that current attitudes are not as they once were. I blame poor supervision which stems back to poor training. In my day training was in house, provided by long service and experienced officers. Then certain politicians decided that was too expensive, and training should be outsourced. It was a flippin disaster and led directly to the poor quality that you see in many officers today! In my day their feet wouldn’t have touched!
The real problem is that the downturn has been in existence for so long that today’s supervisors grew up in the same flawed system.

Sadly AD, As a Country we are vulnerable due to a common mistake by politicians of all colours that do not understand a basic fact. It is this! Society is not naturally lawful, and requires a properly trained and equipped Police force to preserve the safety of the population.
In times of relative calm and low crime, stupid politicians seem to assume that it is safe to cut back on expenditure on Policing. They fail to understand that the calm and low crime is merely an indication that they have the balance of policing about right!
It is not a good idea to destroy that balance as certain politicians did.
